Longford Gas Conditioning Plant

Longford Gas Conditioning Plant

Brief Description

The Longford Gas Conditioning Plant project located in Gippsland in South Eastern Australia is a project in Esso (Exxon Mobil) and BHP Billiton’s significant investment program that will allow a new source of cleaner burning natural gas for households and industries. This investment in the Gippsland area is expected to bring significant long-term benefits to economic growth and help generate employment opportunities.

The Plant will utilise best practice technologies and industry proven methods to ensure the plant operational efficiency to process the gas extracted from the Kipper Tuna Turrum Project. The Kipper Tuna Turrum Project is currently the largest domestic gas development on Australia’s Eastern seaboard and the gas from these fields will produce enough energy to power a city of 1 million people for 35 years.

The Project

Prysmian was awarded the contract for the supply of high voltage cables to the Longford Gas Conditioning Plant project. The project consisted of a horizontal drilling about 1km underground and also the factor of potential part water immersion in relation to the cable installation. In particular, Exxon Mobil requested the cable design life to be over 40 years.

Our Solution and the Outcome of the Project

Through continual liaison between Worley Parson’s engineers and our team of skilled cable engineering staff, Prysmian was able to assist with the design engineering of a high voltage cable that met a number of requirements. It had to be ensured that the high voltage cables designed met the specific environmental conditions, existing regulations of the Oil and Gas Industry and the stringent requirements of Exxon Mobil.

As per the design and project requirements, an effective cable solution was installed which included 24 890 meters of single core 11KV CCU TRX/WST/HD/FRPVC/FBT/FRPVC OR and multicore 11KV CU/TR-X/HD/LS/HDPE high voltage cables.

In addition, the project management conducted by a dedicated internal Project Coordinator and an external Business Development Manager ensured the successful completion of our contract to the highest level of expertise.

Comparatively, the requirements for the Longford Gas Conditioning Plant project were relatively familiar for Prysmian’s expertise and capabilities and ran smoothly according to previous projects.
